5-Day Selous, Mikumi & Udzungwa Safari (Fly-in or Road)

Tour Overview

This five-day safari blends three distinct landscapes and experiences across Tanzania’s southern circuit. Travel by scenic bush flights or overland through rural Tanzania to explore the immense Selous Game Reserve, the open savannahs of Mikumi National Park, and the lush rainforest of Udzungwa Mountains. Days are filled with classic game drives in search of elephant, lion, buffalo, giraffe, and hippo, combined with a river boat safari and a guided hike to waterfalls hidden in the mountains. Accommodation is in carefully selected lodges and tented camps, offering comfort, character, and direct access to nature.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Selous and Boat Safari

Your journey begins with either a short flight from your starting location or a scenic overland drive to Selous Game Reserve. Upon arrival, check in to your lodge or tented camp and enjoy lunch before heading to the Rufiji River for an afternoon boat safari. Glide past pods of hippos, sunbathing crocodiles, and a variety of water birds while elephants drink along the banks. Return to camp for dinner and a night surrounded by the sounds of the African wild.

  • Day 2: Full Day Game Drive in Selous

After an early breakfast, set out for a full day game drive across Selous’ diverse landscapes. The reserve’s vastness means fewer vehicles and a true sense of wilderness. Search for lion prides resting in the shade, packs of wild dogs on the move, and large herds of buffalo crossing the plains. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush before continuing your exploration, returning in the late afternoon for relaxation and dinner.

  • Day 3: Transfer to Mikumi and Afternoon Game Drive

After breakfast, begin your journey north to Mikumi National Park. Depending on your chosen logistics, this may be a short flight or a road transfer through scenic countryside and local villages. On arrival in Mikumi, settle into your lodge and enjoy lunch before heading out for an afternoon game drive. The Mkata Floodplain is a highlight, often compared to the Serengeti in miniature, with its concentration of plains game and predators. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

  • Day 4: Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Today you’ll venture into Udzungwa Mountains for a guided hike through lush rainforest to the famous Sanje Waterfalls. The trail winds through forest alive with endemic Udzungwa red colobus monkeys and abundant birdlife. At the falls, enjoy a picnic lunch and a refreshing swim before making your way back down. Return to your Mikumi lodge in the afternoon for some leisure time and dinner.
