4-Day Selous & Mikumi Safari (Fly-in or Road)

Tour Overview

This four-day safari combines the vast riverine wilderness of Selous Game Reserve with the sweeping savannahs of Mikumi National Park. Starting from your chosen location, you can travel by scenic bush flight or adventurous road journey, or a mix of both for a varied experience. Selous, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers incredible wildlife diversity elephants, lions, hippos, crocodiles, and the rare African wild dog alongside its famous boat safaris on the Rufiji River. Mikumi provides a classic East African safari backdrop, home to large herds of zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, buffalo, and prolific birdlife. Accommodation is in comfortable lodges or tented camps, blending modern amenities with the charm of the wild.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Selous and Boat Safari

Your safari begins with either a morning flight or a road transfer to Selous Game Reserve. On arrival at the airstrip or park gate, your guide will meet you and transfer you to your lodge or camp, where you’ll enjoy a welcome drink and lunch. In the afternoon, embark on a boat safari along the Rufiji River, drifting past pods of hippos, basking crocodiles, and an array of bird species. The golden hour light over the river makes for spectacular photography. Return to camp in time for dinner and your first night in the African bush.

  • Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive in Selous

After an early breakfast, set off for a full-day game drive in an open 4×4 safari vehicle. You’ll explore diverse habitats, from open grasslands to acacia woodlands and winding waterways. Expect encounters with elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions, and, if lucky, the elusive wild dogs. A picnic lunch will be served in a scenic spot within the reserve before continuing your exploration into the afternoon. Return to camp in the evening for dinner and a relaxed night under the stars.

  • Day 3: Transfer to Mikumi and Game Drive

Following breakfast, you’ll depart Selous and travel to Mikumi National Park either via a short flight or a drive through the scenic Uluguru Mountains. Upon arrival, check into your lodge or camp and enjoy lunch. In the late afternoon, head out on a game drive across the Mkata Floodplain, where elephants, zebras, wildebeest, and giraffes graze against a backdrop of the distant mountains. As the sun sets, return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight stay.

  • Day 4: Game Drive and Departure

Rise early for a morning game drive to catch the park’s wildlife at its most active. Lions may be spotted on the prowl, while birdlife fills the air with calls. After returning to camp for breakfast, there’s time to relax before your transfer to the airstrip or park gate for your flight or road journey back to your original starting location, arriving by late afternoon.
