4-Day Mikumi, Udzungwa & Selous Safari (Fly-in or Road)

Lioness Serenegeti

Tour Overview

This four-day safari blends three of Southern Tanzania’s most distinctive wilderness experiences. Travel by scenic bush flights or overland routes to explore Mikumi National Park’s sweeping savannahs, the lush mountain forests and waterfalls of Udzungwa, and the waterways of the Selous Game Reserve. Expect classic big game sightings elephant, lion, buffalo, giraffe paired with rare primates, endemic birdlife, and a tranquil boat safari on the Rufiji River. Accommodation ranges from comfortable lodges to intimate tented camps, each chosen for location, character, and warm Tanzanian hospitality.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Mikumi and Game Drive

Your adventure begins with either a morning flight into Mikumi’s airstrip or a road transfer from your starting location. Upon arrival, your guide will meet you for the short transfer to your lodge or camp. After lunch and a brief rest, set out on your first game drive through Mikumi’s golden grasslands. Herds of zebra and wildebeest stretch across the Mkata Floodplain, while giraffes feed lazily on acacia trees and elephants wander toward waterholes. Return in the early evening for dinner and your first night surrounded by the sounds of the African bush.

  • Day 2: Udzungwa Mountains Exploration

After breakfast, drive toward Udzungwa Mountains National Park, famed for its rich biodiversity and scenic hiking trails. Today you’ll trek to the breathtaking Sanje Waterfalls, passing through rainforest alive with endemic Udzungwa red colobus monkeys and vibrant birdlife. At the falls, enjoy a picnic lunch before descending. Later in the afternoon, return to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and a peaceful night in the Mikumi-Udzungwa region.

  • Day 3: Transfer to Selous and Boat Safari

An early departure takes you south toward the Selous Game Reserve. Depending on your chosen logistics, you’ll either drive through rural villages and rolling hills or take a short flight. Upon arrival and check-in, enjoy lunch and then head out for a boat safari on the Rufiji River. This is a completely different perspective on wildlife spot hippos and crocodiles in the shallows, watch elephants come to drink, and witness colorful birdlife along the banks. As the sun dips low, return for dinner under the stars at your camp.

  • Day 4: Game Drive in Selous and Departure

Rise early for a morning game drive in Selous, where the park’s vast size offers an unhurried, wild experience. Lions may be spotted resting in the shade, packs of wild dogs on the move, or kudu grazing among the miombo woodland. After a late breakfast back at camp, it’s time to check out and begin your return journey by flight or road to your starting location, arriving in the late afternoon.
