3-Day Mikumi & Udzungwa Mountains Safari (Fly-in or Road)

Tour Overview
This three-day adventure blends the best of Tanzania’s diverse landscapes wildlife-rich savannahs and lush tropical forests. Beginning with either a short flight or a scenic road journey from your chosen starting point, you’ll explore Mikumi National Park, home to elephants, giraffes, lions, buffalo, and a wealth of birdlife, before heading to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, renowned for its unique flora, rare primates, and spectacular waterfalls. Accommodation is in a comfortable lodge or tented camp offering modern amenities in a natural setting, with an itinerary designed to balance game viewing, forest trekking, and moments of relaxation.
Day 1: Arrival in Mikumi and Game Drive
Your journey begins with a morning flight over Tanzania’s patchwork of farmlands and forests, or a road transfer through rural villages and scenic highlands. Upon arrival at Mikumi’s airstrip or park gate, you’ll be greeted by your guide and transferred to your lodge or camp. After a welcome drink and lunch, take some time to settle in before heading out on an afternoon game drive across Mikumi’s wide Mkata Floodplain. Here, you can expect to see herds of zebras, elephants, wildebeest, and giraffes, with the backdrop of the Uluguru Mountains creating a dramatic horizon. As the sun sets, return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Game Drive and Transfer to Udzungwa
Wake early for a morning game drive when predators are still active and the soft light creates prime photography conditions. Lions may be seen resting after the night hunt, while antelopes and warthogs graze in the cool air. After breakfast back at camp, depart for a short scenic drive to Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Check into your lodge, enjoy lunch, and spend the afternoon at leisure either relaxing or taking a gentle walk around the lodge grounds to enjoy the views of the surrounding hills. Dinner is served in the evening, with the sounds of the forest setting the tone for the next day’s adventure.
Day 3: Udzungwa Forest Hike and Departure
After an early breakfast, set out for a guided trek into Udzungwa’s tropical rainforest. The trail leads to the breathtaking Sanje Waterfalls, cascading 170 meters into the forest below. Along the way, your guide will point out endemic plant species, butterflies, and primates such as the Udzungwa red colobus monkey. The hike can be adjusted in length and difficulty to suit your fitness level. After descending, return to the lodge for a fresh lunch before starting your return journey either by flight or road to your original starting location, arriving in the late afternoon.
