Arusha National Park

Established in 1960, Arusha National Park covers 137 sq km in northeastern Tanzania. Though one of the country’s smallest parks, it features dramatic topographies including the volcanic Meru Crater, the grasslands of Ngurdoto Crater, and the colourful alkaline Momella Lakes, famous for their flocks of wading birds.
Diverse Landscapes & Wildlife
- Mount Meru: A towering 4,566 m volcano offering spectacular trekking and views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Rift Valley.
- Ngurdoto Crater: Lush grasslands home to elusive black and white colobus monkeys and other wildlife.
- Momella Lakes: Shallow alkaline lakes hosting flocks of pink flamingos and other migratory waterbirds from October to April.
The park’s habitats range from montane forest to swamp to open plains, supporting a rich variety of animals including elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hippos, warthogs, baboons, and several antelope species. Predators like leopards and hyenas are commonly seen, though lions are absent.
Birdlife
Arusha National Park is a bird watcher’s paradise, with vibrant turacos, trogons, birds of prey, and more than 400 bird species recorded. The Momella Lakes especially attract migratory waterbirds during the wet season.
